About WSTA

Keeping History Alive While Driving Toward The Future

Safe Bus

Get ready to be inspired by the story of Safe Bus Company in Winston-Salem, North Carolina! Established in 1926, this company was a beacon of hope for the city's underserved black neighborhoods. At a time when segregation was rampant, Safe Bus provided reliable transportation to the city's tobacco factories for work. With a fleet of 21 jitney operators, Safe Bus was born out of a promise to the city's mayor to operate a safe and dependable transportation service. Today, we honor the legacy of Safe Bus and its commitment to serving the community.

Safe Bus was a pioneering initiative that emerged during the era of segregation, and it played a crucial role in promoting equal to transportation. However, as the city moved towards integration, Safe Bus faced numerous challenges, including a lack of resources, competition from automobiles, and a decline in ridership. In 1972 the city purchased  Safe Bus's assets, retained its staff, and became what remains today, fifty years later the Winston Salem Transit Authority (WSTA).
